Becoming a Fossil A A

Becoming a fossil is harder than it seems. Conditions have to be just right for a fossil to be preserved.

When a dinosaur died, sediment would quickly cover the body to protect it from scavengers and oxygen
that would cause the bones to decay. Over millions of years minerals (silica or iron) percolate through the soil in water and into the cells of the organism – thus making a fossil.
